The three main areas of the English Curriculum are Reading, Writing
and Speaking and Listening.
English is taught through reading, writing and communication in every
curriculum area. Classes Year 1 to Year 6 children also have a dedicated
Literacy Hour every day. The content of work covered in the Literacy
Hour is taken from the National Literacy Strategy. Reception class
follow the Foundation Stage, a specific program designed for younger
children. In the early years there are many opportunities for role-play.
Children are encouraged to read for pleasure. Books chosen by the
children are taken home to be shared with other family members or
to be read alone.
All classes have a buddy reading session once a week. This is where
two classes read together. The mixed ages are very successful, the
children really enjoy buddy reading.
We have a wide range of reading materials in our well-stocked library
and in our classrooms. Classes are involved in whole class reading
using big books.
Teachers have high expectations of the presentation of written
work. This develops a sense of pride within the children. The school
follows a handwriting scheme to ensure consistency of letter formation
throughout the school.
All our children are well known authors!
We have several posters around the school, they remind us that there
are many different reasons for reading.
