9th January 2009
Dear Parents/Carers
Happy New Year to you all. Thank you for all the lovely gifts and cards we received at the end of last term. They were very much appreciated. This is the first newsletter of 2009, it contains a lot of information, so please keep it in a safe place.
Homework Diaries and Reading Diaries (Primary School only)
You should have seen your child’s new homework diary (Yr 2 and Juniors) for this term. If not please ask your child to show you it as you need to sign this every day. Reading diaries (Rec & Yr 1) also need to be brought into school and signed/commented on every day. Thank you for your co-operation regarding this.
Class Assemblies (Primary School only)
Class assemblies are on Tuesdays at 9:05am the same as last term. The dates are as follows:

Yr 2 3rd February 2009
Yr 3 17th March 2009

Our Text Service
Hopefully you will have already received a few texts from us informing you of letters you should receive, early school closure etc. We will use this system regularly to keep you updated about school matters. We will however, still use the cascade telephone system as well as this if the school has to be closed in an emergency. In order for this text service to work well we need to always have your current mobile number. Please inform the office immediately if your mobile number changes so that we can update the system.
Termly Open Forum
Come along and speak to the Senior Leadership Team – Ms Parker, Mr Putman,
Mr Smith and Miss Carponen – about school matters. (Individual children/Teachers/Teaching Assistants will not be discussed). There will be refreshments first and the Forum will start 15 minutes after. They will last for a maximum of an hour.
We are offering one straight after school on Tuesday 3rd March at 3:30pm. There will be a crèche for primary aged children (5 – 11 year olds). Please come along and share your ideas/concerns with us.
Individual Photos (Primary School only)
The children will be having individual photos taken on Thursday 5th February. They will need to wear school uniform as usual, but choice of formal (tie and long sleeve shirt) or informal (no tie and polo shirt) is up to you.
Head Teacher Drop In
The parent/carer drop ins are at 3pm on a Tuesday. It is not a time to talk about your child’s progress, as this should be done with the Class Teacher, but any other matters you wish to discuss.
Violin Lessons
Starting this term there will be a new violin teacher. Her name is Mrs Debbie Diamond (parent of Einav in Reception). Debbie is an experienced teacher (Suzuki violin method) and is very keen to start teaching the violin at a very early age (from Reception onwards). If you are interested in your child having violin lessons please let the office know (the cost at present is £8 for 15 mins).

Fun Evening Discovering Maths
Come and find out how we teach Maths. It is probably very different from when you were at school. Please come along to our Maths Evening on 3rd February 2009 at 7:00pm. Don’t worry we won’t be testing you, it will be a fun evening. We will provide a crèche if there is a need. Please let the office know by Friday 16th January if you require this service.
Decanting
We are going to be on the move soon. Things have changed slightly again!! Reception class are still going to the Children’s Centre in temporary accommodation from the start of the Summer Term. Year 1 will move to the Reception Classroom so they will have direct access to the outside area. Year 2 will stay put. Year 3 will go into the Year 1 classroom, Years 4,5 & 6 will go in to temporary accommodation. There will be a lot to do, sorting and moving everything around, so if you have any spare time and could lend a hand we would appreciate your help.

Why Change4Life?
The way we live in modern society means a lot of us, especially our kids, have fallen into unhelpful habits. This means all of us need to make small changes to eat well, move more, and live longer.
What is Change4Life about?
These days, 'modern life' can mean that we're a lot less active. With so many opportunities to watch TV or play computer games, and with so much convenience and fast food available, we don't move about as much, or eat as well as we used to. Which means that 9 out of 10 kids today could grow up with dangerous amounts of fat in their bodies. This can cause life-threatening diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart disease - so it’s really important that we do something about it.
8 Easy Ways to Change4Life
Simple ways to help kids eat less sugar
Many families are making Sugar Swaps. They’re swapping food and drink with added sugar for stuff that’s lower in sugar or sugar free.
5 a day
Giving them their 5 portions of fruit or veg a day is easier than you think.

Meal time
It’s important to make room for 3 regular meals.

60 active minutes
Do your kids get their 60 minutes everyday?

Snack check
Reduce unhealthy snacking.

Me size meals
Make sure kids eat the right sized portions for their age.

Cut back fat
Lower the fat in your family’s diet.

Up and about
Kids shouldn’t just veg out - get them out and about . |
