Religious Education forms part of the basic curriculum in accordance
with the Education Reform Act 1988 and in line with the London Borough
of Barnet’s Agreed Syllabus.
Our children are encouraged to understand the basis of belief of
different faiths so that they can live side by side in a multi-faith
society with mutual understanding and respect. Parents / carers
may withdraw children from Religious Education and collective worship,
if they wish.
The daily acts of worship (assemblies) aims to:
• Give expression to the values and concerns of the community.
• Celebrate the contribution of individuals or groups to the
life of our school.
• Recognise the celebration of festivals in various religious
traditions in our community.
Why do we learn about the Worlds Religions?
We asked some of the children their views on this. Here are their
ideas:
• We learn about Religious Education because we need to learn
about the people who live with us in the world. If we do not learn
about different cultures we might say something that harms someone.
• We need to learn about religions so all the cultures can
be respectful to each other, and get along in the future.
• In Religious Education we learn about acceptance and patience.
• We should be respectful and have full tolerance towards
religions that are different to our own.
• We learn about Religious Education so we know not to treat
people differently. Even though we are all different we should be
treated the same.
• If we learn about Religious Education then we will know
about any festivals and special events in other religions.
• We learn about religious Education because we need to know
how to respect other people’s personal beliefs.
Year 6 recently looked at the question: How do people behave?
They looked at the ‘rules’ they thought all people should
follow in life. They then applied these rules to a religion of their
choice. They produced Power Point presentations with the information.
Some examples are included here.
